Caring for your mattress

Give your mattress a little regular care, and it will serve you well for many years to come.

Airing your mattress

On taking delivery of your new mattress, it is a good idea to air your mattress for several hours to ensure that any new upholstery or natural wool odours dissipate fully. Regularly airing your mattress in a well-ventilated room ensures proper maintenance and will prolong its lifespan.

Proper usage

Do not allow children to stand or jump on the mattress as it puts excessive strain on the component parts and may damage them beyond repair. It is also not advisable to sit on the side of the mattress for long periods.

Bases and bed frames

To ensure optimum performance of your mattress, it is vital to correctly support it by placing it on a new divan base or other suitable foundation. Placing a new mattress on an old base may contribute to a fault developing with the mattress. When the mattress is being used on a slatted bed or wooden bedstand, please ensure that the space between the slats is no more than 50mm, and that there is a central support rail. For King and Super King mattresses there should be two central support rails. The foundation must be level and have no dips when you lie into the mattress. This will prevent sagging and will prolong the lifespan of the mattress.

Drawers

Drawers in the base provide useful storage and do not weaken the base in anyway. However, do not be tempted to overload the drawers. Whilst sturdy, they are best used for items like bedding, linen and clothing. Heavy objects may damage the drawers beyond repair.

Taking care of your mattress

There is an old saying – “All you need in life is a good mattress and a good pair of shoes because if you’re not in one, you’re in the other.” Just like a new pair of shoes, your new mattress needs breaking in. Allow at least a month to adjust to the new comfort and support of your mattress. In general, mattresses today are thicker and more sumptuous than years gone by. Natural Sleep mattresses incorporate multiple layers of fillings and hi loft quilted surfaces which are designed to compress and settle with use.

The areas where body weight is concentrated will compress as the materials bed down. As a result, slight body depressions may be seen on the mattress surface. This is quite normal. Any impressions that develop indicate that the mattress surface is conforming to your body’s individual shape. For people who sleep alone on a double mattress, this bedding down period is more pronounced as only one sleep surface is being used. Rotate the mattress regularly or alternate your sleeping position to wear the mattress evenly.

Turning and rotating

Regular rotation is recommended for all mattresses. Except for specific non-turn mattresses, please turn the mattress frequently from end-to-end, and completely all over to give the filling materials the opportunity to settle. Turn and rotate your mattress once a month for the first six months, and every four months thereafter. This will minimize body impressions on your mattress. If you sleep alone, alternate your sleeping position to ensure your mattress wears evenly. Do not sleep on the same side for six months.

If you are sleeping on a King or Super King size mattress, because the surface is so wide and the middle of the mattress is rarely slept on, a slight rise can develop in the middle. As well as turning and rotating the mattress if it is double-sided, try to sleep in the centre of the mattress occasionally to help settle the fillings in the middle. Handles on the mattress are for positioning the mattress on the base only. Do not use for lifting or turning the mattress over.
