Buying Guide

Your Sleep is Unique

The right mattress is key to getting a good night’s sleep. But how do you know what's right for you?

Shopping for a new mattress can be overwhelming, with unfamiliar vocabulary and specialist terminology adding to the confusion. Without some basic information, it’s hard to distinguish between features, recognise quality, and understand what’s the best choice for your sleep needs. It’s worth investing a little time at the start to make an informed decision. After all, you spend approximately a third of your life sleeping! A quality mattress should meet the needs of your body shape and weight, alleviate back discomfort and help to relieve allergies if required.

Our founder James has compiled a simple mattress buying guide with his recommendations to help you find the right mattress for your needs.

Pick a Sleep Type:
Back Pain

We can't cure back pain, but we can help. A selection of Natural Sleep Co. mattresses are built with back care specifically in mind, providing lumbar support for back and side sleeping positions, to help ease back discomfort. Look for our innovative spinal zone system built into the middle of the mattress, providing premium orthopaedic support. In some cases, an adjustable bed may also be of benefit for back issues.

The flexibility to change the bed's position can help ease back and arthritic pain and improve circulation, and can give relief to sciatica, swollen legs and cramping.

Hot Sleepers

Night time sweating can be very problematic for those going through hormonal changes, illness, menopause, perimenopause, and those who just naturally sleep hot. It's important to know that memory foam mattresses are not suitable, as this type of foam has insulating properties. Natural latex and lambswool layers are much better options, they’re naturally cooler and heat regulating to keep you warm in winter and cooler in summer. Look for natural fabrics covering the mattress too, such as cotton or linen which are breathable, moisture wicking, and cooling.

Cold at Night

Natural latex and lambswool layers provide heat regulating comfort to keep you warm in winter and cooler in summer. If you are cold at night then a smart foam layer is insulating and moulds to the body’s warmth.

Snoring

Sleeping on your side can help reduce snoring, and choosing a softer mattress will ensure side sleepers are comfortable. Latex is a particularly good option, offering high tensile support with softness and you should also look to smart foam options. An adjustable bed can help with more serious issues relating to snoring. The ability to raise your head and elevate your feet can help with sleep apnoea, snoring, asthma and breathing problems, as well as the symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn.

Allergies

Where bed meets body, the skin can be irritated or soothed depending on the quality of the fabrics and fillings used in your mattress. Eczema and asthma can be triggered by dust mites, so hypoallergenic materials like latex and lambswool are of great benefit. Look for natural fabrics covering the mattress too. Our Comfort collection mattresses are treated with a bio based natural allergen control technology whose probiotic content provides superior protection against dust mites as well as dog and cat allergens. Our Organic collection mattresses are 100% organic and naturally hypoallergenic, and should be considered by those suffering from skin sensitivities that make sleep difficult.

Light Sleeper

Latex, pocket sprung and memory foam are all components that will reduce motion disturbance between partners, and provide a sound night's rest, whereas pure lambswool contributes to a quieter and more serene sleep environment, as unlike some synthetic materials it doesn’t rustle.

Heavy Weight

A mattress must support the body correctly, no matter your body weight. It should be more firm for heavier weights, and more forgiving for lighter people. It is important to invest in a good quality durable mattress, and to properly care for the mattress as it will wear more quickly the heavier the weight of the sleeper. As we don’t use polyester in our mattresses, there shouldn’t be issues with indentations. For the first six months the mattress should be rotated very regularly to wear evenly. Heavier people do need more support. If you are concerned about heavy body weight, we can also create a custom mattress especially for you, with very little difference to the cost. Two in a Bed

Finding the right fit for two people sharing a bed can feel like a compromise on one or the other’s sleep needs. We often have customers who come to us and say “I share a bed with my husband who is much heavier than me. He wants a firm mattress, but I want something softer and more plush.” Our Pure Organic double, king and super king mattresses is the ideal solution - dual mattresses featuring two individual mattresses in medium soft and medium firm, covered with an organic cotton and lambswool mattress topper. The appearance is of one mattress, but it has different firmness for each person, so no need to compromise on individual preference for softness or support. Additionally, our adjustable beds for two people are designed with two individual mattresses, controlled separately so that one person can lie flat, while the other can sit up in bed. The mattresses themselves are also designed with dual-sided firmness. One side is softer which suits some sleepers such as side sleepers, while flipping the mattress to the firmer side provides extra support.

Mobility Issues

An electric adjustable bed can promote independence, maximise comfort, and help maintain good sleep quality and better health for those with mobility issues. Raise your back and elevate your feet with the touch of a button to maximise comfort, sit up, or get in and out of bed more easily.

Quality on a Budget

When you want a quality mattress but cost is of primary concern, our Comfort Collection offers exceptional quality at affordable prices. When looking for luxury at a lower cost, consider a pocket sprung interior, with layers of fillings like high density foam and smart foam. Our top end mattresses use more expensive natural materials like pulse latex, organic cotton and pure organic lambswool, but our more affordable options also have natural materials too. Our Essential Organic is our entry level Organic mattress, suitable for children, young adults or guest rooms.  It should be noted that the quality of the materials used will ensure the durability of the mattress and provide value in the long term.

Best of the Best

For the very best mattress money can buy, using the finest of natural fillings, we recommend latex where suitable. Our most expensive mattress, the Pure Organic, should also last the longest, nearly twice as long as a memory foam mattress for example, due to its full latex core. Our organic mattress topper (coming soon), made with pure lambswool and organic cotton, provides an added layer of comfort and softness.

Children's Beds

A young child may only need the simplest quality mattress, but age and needs can vary greatly. Allergy sufferers could benefit from our Premium Collection or Organic Collection. Talk to us today to find out what you really need.

Spare Room

Families can often play musical beds at night! The spare room can be just as important as your main bed. Or if used mainly as a guestroom, you may want to invest a little less but still ensure your guests get a fantastic night's sleep.

Pregnancy & Postpartum

During pregnancy, a mattress that balances comfort with spinal support is essential, especially as sleeping positions change. Latex and pocket sprung mattresses provide pressure relief around the hips and shoulders, while adjustable beds can help with circulation, swollen legs, and easier mobility in and out of bed. After birth, supportive yet gentle mattresses with good motion isolation are beneficial during restless, broken nights. Our Adjustable Bed collection would provide the ultimate flexibility for breastfeeding, allowing the mother to sit up in bed and elevate the legs. Dual controlled, it allows one person to lay flat and while the other side is raised if desired.

Eco-conscious

For those who want their mattress choice to be better for the planet, our Organic Collection offers the peace of mind that comes from natural, renewable, and ethically sourced materials. Organic cotton, lambswool, and natural latex replace chemicals and synthetics, while offering exceptional comfort and durability. Choosing an organic mattress is an investment in both your health and the environment.

Tall Sleepers

We understand the nightmare of finding a quality mattress if you're taller than average.  A mattress that supports your full length is essential. Prioritise edge-to-edge support so you don’t feel restricted by roll-off at the sides or feet hanging over the edge. Latex and pocket sprung mattresses provide consistent support right to the perimeter. We can also custom make all our mattresses in longer options, at very little difference to the cost. Just ask us!

Active Lifestyles

Sleep is key to recovery, and choosing the right mattress can make a real difference. Pressure-relieving layers like latex, combined with natural temperature regulation, help muscles recover overnight. Good spinal alignment is especially important after heavy training sessions, while motion isolation ensures deep, restorative sleep.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers are often overlooked. Sleeping on your stomach requires a firmer mattress to prevent the spine from arching and putting pressure on the lower back. A supportive latex or smart foam mattress offers the right balance between firmness and comfort to avoid waking up with aches and pains.

Readers & Relaxers

For those who like to read, watch TV, or even work from bed, comfort goes beyond sleep. An adjustable bed allows you to raise your head and upper body to the perfect angle, reducing strain on your back and neck. Independent sides for couples add even more everyday comfort.

Rental & Holiday Homes

If you’re buying a mattress for a guest bedroom, rental, or holiday home, then durability and versatility are key. Look for a mattress that offers universal comfort, with a pocket sprung core and natural fillings to suit most sleepers. A two-sided mattress is also ideal for longevity in properties that see frequent use. Our Ultimate Flotation mattress is our most popular mattress choice for hotels and guesthouses around Ireland.
