Sleep Advice

We understand that everyone's sleep is unique. The key to a good night's rest is finding the perfect mattress.

Buying mattresses can be a minefield. A mattress has to meet the needs of your body shape and weight, and often help relieve medical problems like back discomfort or allergies. Your mattress has to support you and possibly, the different needs of your partner too! Here's what you need to know.

James Hayes founded Natural Sleep over 30 years ago, and is an expert on sleep solutions. Here he shares what you need to know, before you buy the right mattress.

What you didn't know about bedding and sleep

We spent a third of our adult lives in our beds, so it's worth investing in a quality mattress. Because the human body perspirates at night, we know that about an egg cup of perspiration or sweat is absorbed by your mattress during a single night. Many mattresses are like a sponge, and soak up this perspiration, up to 3 gallons of sweat in the lifespan of the mattress. With quality fillings like lambswool can prevent night time sweating.

When to change your mattress

Most people can't tell you how old a mattress is - a quality mattress can remain unchanged for 20 years, causing untold sleep problems. With sweat, dustmites and wear and tear, this is far too long. Even the best mattresses should be replaced every ten years, if they are getting nightly use. Spare mattresses can be used for longer, as they will have had less use. An old mattress can be responsible for many common sleep problems.

Chronic Back Pain and Sleep

Night time should be an opportunity for the body to rest. During the day, the effect of gravity causes compression on the spine, while at night, the spine has a chance to relax. It was the established thinking that the firmer the mattress the better it was, and that a very firm mattress would help with any sleep problems. This is not necessarily the case. Your body weight and height is extremely important when choosing a mattress.

Extra support is needed for a heavier body - this will also prevent your sleeping partner from being disturbed. Your sleeping position is also key - for those who often sleep on their side, a slightly less firm mattress, perhaps with memory foam and a latex layer would be the ideal material, so the extra weight of the hips could be absorbed, allowing the spinal column to stay in line, though the sleeper is on his or her side.

Tossing and Turning

Lots of people experience trouble sleeping. Tossing and turning and not being able to get into a comfortable position during the night is a problem for many people. By having the right mattress to mould into your body shape will provide support for your body and so enable rest and a peaceful night's sleep. In selecting the right mattress you need to consider your own personal tastes. At Natural Sleep we can help you make the right decision with our years of experience in helping people get a good night's sleep.
