Being on bed rest, whatever the reason, can be mentally and emotionally straining. However, staying positive is not only important for your recovery process, it’s also vital for your mental health. Here are some methods you can use to remain positive.
Create a positive space
Being on bed rest can often mean you’re constantly looking at the same surroundings. Make this a positive space by filling it with things that make you happy, such as fresh flowers or scented candles. Choose comfortable bedding in a bright colour to add cheer to your room and add a large mirror to reflect light and make the space appear larger and open. If you’re getting tired of looking at the same decor, consider printing out photographs of loved ones or motivational quotes, and rotate the images on your bedside table.
While you’re on bed rest you may not feel up to talking to your loved ones, physically or emotionally. However, it’s important to maintain contact and a support system. Make it a point to spend half an hour every day communicating with a loved one, whether it’s through face to face interaction, skype or phone calls. Joining social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter also allows you to keep up to date with your friends and families latest news and share your own.
Structure your time
Creating a schedule for your day not only gives you things to look forward, helping you remain positive, it also helps time pass quicker. Once you wake up in the morning write down everything you would like to do and accomplish that day, such as meal times, how many chapters of your book you’d like to finish or talking to friends. While you don’t have to stick to this rigidly, it ensures you always have an activity you could be completing. It also helps you plan what you need for the day, allowing you to keep it nearby. This could be anything, including snacks, books, movies and your mobile phone.
Learn a new skill
Challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby is a fantastic way to pass time. Buy a set of language CDs and try to learn a new language, take up a new craft such as crocheting or painting with watercolours or learn to play a small musical instrument. Easy to follow and free online tutorials make picking up new hobbies easier than ever. Not only does this pass the time, setting yourself a goal and working to achieve it encourages positive mental health. Keep reading here for more information.
