A Guide to Common Natural Mattress Materials

Natural Mattress

Mattresses made with natural materials can have a range of benefits for your health, as chemicals are not inhaled or absorbed through your skin while you sleep. But without a clear understanding of the differences between the materials, it can be confusing to decide which ones are best for your sleep needs. To help you, we have broken down what each natural mattress material is composed of and detailed their benefits.

Latex

Latex is a natural material made of sap harvested from rubber trees. However, some mattress companies now use synthetic latex, so always check the label carefully before purchasing. Natural latex is hypoallergenic, preventing dust mites and allergies from affecting your sleep. It contours to your body shape, relieving pressure and allowing weight to be evenly distributed. It also has the added benefit of absorbing disturbances caused by you (or your partner!) movements, meaning you can sleep uninterrupted.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is made of polyurethane, with additives increasing its viscosity and density. While it is not natural, some manufacturers use less chemicals than others, meaning checking the label or asking the salesperson questions is essential. The additives will generally evaporate while the foam is being processed. The high density foam softens in relation to body heat, allowing it mould to your body. Like latex, memory foam absorbs shock, meaning it’s ideal for those who toss and turn while sleeping or are sharing a bed with a partner.

Lambswool

Lambswool is a totally natural material that creates a breathable layer for your mattress. It can be organically treated and regulates your body temperature, ensuring you remain warm and cosy in winter yet cool in the summer. The breathability that lambswool offers additionally allows it to draw perspiration away from your skin for a comfortable night’s sleep. This can be aired out in the morning to keep your natural mattress fresh!

Natural Cotton

Natural cotton is an organic material derived from plants and is ideal for those with sensitive skin. It is durable, yet soft to touch, making it the perfect material for a mattress or to use as a layer between the filling and the top quilting. It’s proven to minimize skin irritations and allergies, making natural cotton mattresses especially suitable for those with skin disorders such as eczema.
